In two centuries of American Ornithology, The Birds of North America is only the fourth comprehensive, scholarly reference covering the life histories of the breeding birds of the United States and Canada. The original print version completed in 2002 included 18,000 pages and was a joint 10 year project of the American Ornithologists' Union, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Academy of Natural Sciences.

Now as an online reference, the content has been expanded to include audio and video selections in addition to many more photos. Links are being established to enable direct review of the latest observations in eBird and to explore additional sound cuts within Macaulay Library's extensive sound collection. Each month, 3-4 species accounts are revised to reflect the latest information.
